You’ve Got A Friend In Me - The Power of Networks

This week, I received a shout-out from a dear friend and former boss, and it left me reflecting on the power of networks. There’s something special about being recognised by someone who knows you deeply, not just as a professional but as a person. It made me realise how often we underestimate the importance of building and maintaining relationships throughout our careers.

 As we navigate our professional journeys, it's easy to focus solely on performance, outcomes, and achievements. But at the heart of every successful career is something far more essential—our connections with others. Whether it’s a former boss, a mentor, or a peer, the relationships we build often play a more significant role in our success than we might realise.

 Networks Are More Than Professional Contacts

 Networking isn’t just about exchanging business cards or connecting on LinkedIn. It’s about genuine human relationships. These connections serve as sounding boards, support systems, and growth catalysts throughout our careers. My own experience has shown me that these connections are invaluable, especially when facing challenges or transitions.

 A friend-mentor relationship, like the one I have with my former boss, is a great example. It’s not just about what you can give or get in a transactional sense but about shared experiences, trust, and the long-term value of mutual support. He knows behind all the sweary ranting (mine not his), we share the same values when it comes to the employee experience and journey. He supported me through the madness of menopause, a ridiculous month-long quarantine in Rome during the pandemic and the death of my mother shortly after I returned to the UK. The shout-out I received this week was a reminder of that enduring value.

 The Importance of Keeping in Touch

 We often let relationships fade over time due to busyness or career changes, but maintaining those connections can pay off in unexpected ways. Staying in touch with former colleagues or bosses, even through a quick message or an occasional check-in, can reignite valuable bonds. These are the people who have witnessed your growth, understand your strengths, and can often provide opportunities, encouragement, or insights when you least expect it.

 It’s also important to reciprocate. Networking isn’t a one-way street; it’s about being there for others in their time of need too. Whether it’s offering advice, making introductions, or simply giving someone the acknowledgment they deserve, paying it forward enriches both your network and your own sense of contribution.

 Building a Supportive Ecosystem.

 For me, networks have always been a source of strength, especially when facing difficult times. There’s no shame in leaning on your network when you need help, whether you’re searching for a new opportunity, seeking advice, or just needing emotional support during a challenging phase.

 Likewise, be willing to offer that same support to others. Over time, your network can become a strong, reliable ecosystem of mutual growth and encouragement. It’s the people in our lives who help us weather the storms and celebrate the victories.

 That shout-out from my former boss reminded me to be more mindful of my own network. It’s easy to get caught up in the day-to-day demands of life, but it's important to nurture the relationships that have shaped who we are and where we’re going.
